Stage 2 — Setup Checklist
Tick what your business does. Your answers arrange the product around you — they never switch anything off.
Below the Your business card on /setup is a checklist of plain questions about what the business does — what it sells, where that comes from, when money moves. Every option says what it turns on.
Most products ask "which modules do you want?", which needs you to already know what a bill of materials is and to predict your own future at the moment of signup. This asks what the business does and works the rest out.
Part one — what your business does
Every answer in this part is free on every plan; the heading carries an All free badge to say so. Each question allows more than one answer. Two of them are follow-ups that only appear when an earlier answer makes them relevant.
| Question | Options | What each option turns on |
|---|---|---|
| What does your business sell? — "Pick both if you do both." | Things you can touch · Work you do for people | Inventory · Projects and timesheets |
| Where do those things come from? — follow-up, only if you sell things | You buy them ready to sell · You make them | Purchases and goods received · Production, recipes and cost cards |
| Who does the making? — follow-up, only if you make them | Your own team and equipment · You hire others to do it | Labour hours and machine overhead · Subcontract cost lines |
| When do customers pay you? — "Tick everything that happens." | Before you deliver — a deposit · At the point of sale · After you invoice them | Customer deposits, held as a liability · The till · Invoices, receivables and statements |
| When do you pay your suppliers? — "Tick everything that happens." | Before they deliver — a prepayment · At the point of purchase · After they bill you | Supplier prepayments, held as an asset · Cash purchases · Bills, payables and ageing |
Untick a parent answer and its follow-up disappears, together with whatever it had brought forward.
Part two — what you want separate scorecards for
This card is the only question that moves a number, and the number is the plan the site sells. "One scorecard is one unit. Everything above stays free whatever you answer here."
| Count | Starts at | What it turns on |
|---|---|---|
| Locations | 1 | More than one: separate books per location, and transfers between them (Business Units). |
| Departments | 0 | One or more: a profit and loss per department. |
Units are locations plus departments, so a single-location business with no departments is 1 unit — "you pay for how much business you run, never for how many people run it." The badge on the card shows the plan band from the location count alone: Free for one location, Growth for up to six, Enterprise beyond. Departments never change the band.
Finishing
A running summary — "We will put N things in front of you" — appears as soon as one answer brings something forward, and the count follows every tick. Set up my books is enabled once the business has a name and a currency and at least two questions are answered; Skip for now is always available. See Saving or skipping for what each one writes.
An answer decides what is in front of you, never what you may do. Say you do not invoice and Invoices leaves the home screen and drops down the create sheet — it stays in search and at its own route. The 14-day trial covers every module whatever you answer, and no answer touches a subscription, a price or a permission.
