Foreign Currency

Raise invoices, bills and payments in any currency — the currency and its exchange rate are chosen on the document, and every figure is kept in your home currency.

Home currency: Settings → Company → Business → Legal identity → Currency. Transaction currency: the Currency control on the document form.

Trabalance keeps every figure in your home currency. A document can be raised in any other currency: you pick it on the document itself, confirm the exchange rate, and the document stores both. There is no separate list of "enabled" currencies to maintain — the full ISO 4217 list is always available.

Choosing a Currency on a Document

1
Open the currency picker

On an invoice, bill, sales receipt or spend form, click the currency control. The picker lists every ISO 4217 currency with its name; your home currency is greyed out because it needs no rate.

2
Search

Type a code or a name — "GBP", "Pound".

3
Check the rate

Each row shows 1 XXX = rate HOME (home currency per one unit of the foreign currency). When the rate service is configured for your business, today's rate is suggested; click the pencil to type your own. When rates cannot be reached, the picker says so and asks you to enter the rate you are using.

4
Confirm

Click the row (or the tick beside a typed rate). The document records the currency code and the exchange rate you confirmed.

⚠️Rate changes are not retroactive

A rate belongs to the document it was confirmed on. Changing the suggested rate later does not touch posted documents — a posted transaction keeps the rate that was in effect when it was posted. This is correct accounting behaviour; changing a posted transaction's rate retroactively would distort the historical ledger.

ℹ️Currency on the transaction, not the customer

You can invoice the same customer in different currencies for different transactions. The rate is confirmed per document, so two invoices to the same customer on different days can carry different rates.

ℹ️Home currency is set once

The home currency lives in the business profile and is required. Changing it after transactions exist invalidates existing balances — see Business Details.
